The Norwegian Star is one of Norwegian Cruise Line’s classic, medium-sized ships and offers a pleasantly personal alternative to the large, newer-generation resort ships. As a member of the Dawn Class, it combines easy navigation, a varied range of dining options and the relaxed Freestyle Cruising experience with a particular focus on diverse and, in some cases, extraordinary itineraries.
Life on board is considerably quieter than on the Prima, Aqua or Encore. The centrepiece of the outdoor decks is the Oasis Pool, complemented by a total of six hot tubs and spacious sunbathing areas. With Spice H2O, the Star also features a retreat area exclusively for adults. The Mandara Spa and fitness facilities provide relaxation, whilst the multi-storey Stardust Theatre, live music, casino and various bars and lounges provide entertainment.
Culinary-wise, the Norwegian Star offers a remarkable selection despite its modest size. In addition to two main restaurants and the Garden Café, options include Cagney’s Steakhouse, Le Bistro, La Cucina and Teppanyaki. There are also numerous bars and lounges, such as Gatsby’s Champagne Bar and the Bliss Ultra Lounge.
The Norwegian Star was last refurbished in 2021 and has been modernised accordingly. However, its real strength lies not so much in spectacular attractions as in its versatility: NCL deploys it on interesting itineraries in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe, as well as to South America, Africa, the Panama Canal and longer ‘Extraordinary Journeys’.
Conclusion: The Norwegian Star is ideal for couples, connoisseurs and experienced cruisers who prioritise the itinerary and a relaxed on-board experience over go-kart tracks, huge water parks or other major attractions. Its comfortable size, good variety of restaurants and exceptional itineraries make it particularly appealing for longer, destination-focused cruises. Families will also find suitable options, but overall the Star tends to appeal more to guests who prefer a more traditional NCL experience.
